FRIENDS OF PIFF
The 10th Pyongyang International Film Festival (PIFF) September 17th to 26th 2008: Sponsorship for electronic subtitles.

This is the third festival which is truly international (previously the festival was aimed at developing and non-aligned nations).

International films will be screened throughout the city and the most popular films soon get talked about and the desire to see them is immense, over 120,000 tickets are sold and popular films, for example ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ had an impressive total attendance of around 12,000 locals. From our experience the desire to watch foreign films is certainly present and the queues that form around the booths scattered throughout the city prove this.

The festival has the support of the various Embassies in Pyongyang, The Goethe Institute, Lee and Gund Foundation and various other organisations. It is a festival established for cultural rather than commercial reasons – it is of huge significance that the DPRK are allowing foreign films to screen, and film is a fantastic cultural medium to help build mutual understanding.

FRIENDS OF PIFF (DPRK) follow the festival’s aim of ‘Encouraging the development of national film in all countries by promoting exchange and co-operation among the world film makers under the ideal of ‘Independence, Peace and Friendship’.
